The Law Society of Hong Kong has announced the winners of the 2021 Pro Bono and Community Service Recognition Program

To show its appreciation and recognition of members of the Law Society and law firms that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to pro bono volunteerism and community service, the Law Society recently announced the recipients of the Volunteer Recognition Program and of Community Service 2021 (“the Program”).

The 2021 program has been well received by lawyers and law firms with over 300 applications. A total of 37 law firms and 235 lawyers received awards under the program, including several distinguished awards given to those who have achieved outstanding performance in delivering pro bono and community services.

Ms. Tsao Chiao Yin Evelyn received the Distinguished Pro Bono Service Award, while Mr. Luk Yiu Chung David and Ms. Yeung Nga Man received the Distinguished Community Service Award. Ho Patricia & Associates, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom were the recipients of the Distinguished Pro Bono Law Firm Award, and the Distinguished Community Service Law Firm Award was given to King & Wood Mallesons, Minterellison LLP, Reynolds Porter Chamberlain.

To encourage lawyers and law firms to use their resources and expertise in the service of different service objectives, the “Special Award of the Year” was recently introduced. As part of the 2021 program, the award was given to Ms. Vasilopoulos Eftihia (lawyer) and Baker & McKenzie (law firm) for their outstanding performance in serving “youth and children”. The service objective set for the 2022 Program is “Animals, wildlife and the environment”.

The Law Society was very honored to be honored by the participation of the members of the jury representing various sectors in the selection of the winners. Panel members for the Distinguished Pro Bono Awards include Ms. Winnie Chiu, Ombudsman; Mr. Ricky Chu, Chairman of the Equal Opportunity Commission; Mr. Thomas Kwong, Director of Legal Aid; Ms. Joyce Lai, Assistant Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Public Affairs and Compliance); Ms. Gilly Wong, Director General of the Consumer Council; Mr. CM Chan, Chair and Chair of the Law Society’s Volunteer and Community Service Recognition Committee; Mr. Junius Ho, former President of the Bar; and Mr. Christopher Wong, member of the Law Society’s Pro Bono and Community Work Recognition Committee. Panel members for the Distinguished Community Service Awards include Mr. Cliff Choi, Commercial Director of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service; Mr. Andy Ho, Executive Director of the Federation of Hong Kong Youth Groups; Ms. Camilla Tsang, Vice President of the Agency for Voluntary Service; Mr. Stephen Yau, General Manager of the International Social Service Branch in Hong Kong; Ms. Melissa Pang, Past President and Member of the Law Society’s Volunteer and Community Service Recognition Committee; Mr. Alan Schiffman, Chair of the Law Society’s Pro Bono Committee; Ms. Daphne Lo, member of the Law Society’s Pro Bono and Community Work Recognition Committee; and Ms. Patricia Ho, consultant member of the Law Society’s Pro Bono and Community Work Recognition program.
